Earlier this week, the Silicon Valley based company Miles launched a new app that is focused on rewarding its users for their everyday ways of transportation. While most loyalty programs are rewarding you for your flights our hotel stays, Miles rewards you from everything from going for a walk to bicycle and train rides (and yes, airplanes too).
The idea is, the more environmentally friendly the mode of transportation is, the more miles you will earn. For example, a 5 mile walk will get you 50 miles, while a 5 mile car ride will only earn you 5 miles.
As with most programs, Miles comes with Tiers, though it only was two. After the default tier, you can advance up to Platinum by earning 2,000 miles in a month.
Redeeming points
Miles offers a wide variety of redemptions through their partners, ranging from Starbucks gift cards to free parking at the airport. If you’re a Platinum member, redemptions will typically cost you less. Each redemption in the app can only be used once.
When redeeming points, you will get a voucher you can use at the website for which you redeemed points.
Location tracking
The app works by tracking your location to automatically determine how you are moving around. You don’t have to (nor have the ability to) manually input your own trips, though you can request adjustments, for example to change an incorrectly marked car ride as a bus ride.
Currently, Miles is only available for iPhone users, with a version for Android coming out later. The app can be download here for free.
